The Øresund project: connecting Denmark and Sweden

From the coast of Denmark a 2.2 miles (3,5 km) immersed tunnel will carry the traffic to a 2.5 miles (4 km) long artificial island. From there an almost 5 miles (8 km) long two-level bridge leads the four-lane highway (upper deck) and the two-track railway (lower deck) to the Swedish coast at Malmö.

Casting of tunnel elements
The immersed tube tunnel consists of twenty elements, manufactured in a custom-made concrete factory in Copenhagen’s North Harbor. One element is 577 Ft (176 m) long and weights up to 55,000 tons. It is composed of eight 72 Ft (22 m) segments, of which each is cast in one single operation, taking approximately 24 hours. Enerpac nickel plated CLL Series jacks were used to release the inside walls of the tunnel mould. Special long stroke CLL Series jacks lifted the tunnel segments out of the mould, for further transport.

Positioning the bridge elements
The bridge elements are lowered on to jacks. At each pylon two separately controlled sets of four CLR Series double-acting jacks are used to position the bridge elements on their bearings in line. Another two sets of four horizontally placed CLR jacks provide horizontal lining-up capability.

Supporting the traffic deck
After placing the bridge elements (train deck) on the pylons, the motorway deck was placed on top of it. In order to support and to position the motorway deck, the same CLR jacks were used again for this job.
