Removing the Spans of the old Bay Bridge in Record Time
The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge spans San Francisco Bay in California. As part of Interstate 80 and the direct road between San Francisco and Oakland, it carries about 270,000 vehicles a day on its two decks, and has one of the longest spans in the United States.

Hydraulic Jacking System Assists Construction of the Honolulu Rail Transit System
In 2012, the Honolulu Rail Transit Project began the construction of a 20-mile elevated rail line. The rail system seeks to alleviate significant traffic issues affecting Hawaii’s most congested city. Kiewit was tasked with the design and construction of the elevated rail guideway. In order to accelerate the construction timeline and maintain a high-level of quality, Kiewit selected a segmental precast span-by-span construction technique to complete the project.

Hydraulic Boom Gantry Safely Transports 120 ton Machine Bed
Gushee's Rigging and Heavy Hauling, the premier machinery mover in New England, was tasked to safely transport a 243,000 pound machine bed for one of its customers. The machine bed had to be unloaded from a truck, uncrated and placed in a 6-foot deep pit inside a building.

Synchronous Lift System Launches 43,000 ton Offshore Oil Platform
Lift, balance, weigh and smoothly launch a 43,000-ton floating oil production system for the Gurmusut-Kakap offshore Malaysian oil field. Maintaining the integrity of the structure throughout the lift was essential, not only to ensure the safety of the lift, but also to ensure structural integrity and safety throughout its operational life.

Replacing Rail Bridge Decks with a Hydraulic Gantry
Timing is critical for rail construction projects to avoid unscheduled disruption to train and passenger services. However, the best project planning can be undermined by adverse weather conditions. High winds, greater than 12 mph, may prevent bridge deck lifting using a crane, leading to project delays.

Hydraulic Drive System for Las Vegas Observation Wheel
Erecting the Las Vegas High Roller Observation Wheel included installing the 28 passenger cabins. To ensure accurate and safe installation, a hydraulic drive system was needed to turn the wheel for correct positioning and placement. The drive system would also be critical in the overall rotation of the wheel, which would serve as the permanent operating system. Enerpac and Schwager Davis Inc., a specialty contractor, worked together to supply a reliable system solution.

Hydraulics play key role in the Installation of Venice MOSE Caissons
Over the last 100 years, the city of Venice has sunk 23 cm while sea levels have risen. In recent years the frequency and intensity of flooding has increased causing significant damage. The MOSE project is intended to protect the city from flooding. The project includes the installation of multiple underwater caissons with mobile gates that can be raised to prevent water from the sea from entering the lagoon.

Turbine Lift and Load-in at Shipping Port
A Siemens gas turbine arrived at the Samsun Sea Port destine for a new 600MW natural gas combined cycle power plant in Samsun, Turkey. The 482 ton turbine needed to be lifted and loaded onto a SPMT in order to be transported to the Cengiz Enerji power plant.

Pre-Loading Bridge Cables with a Battery Powered Hydraulic Pump
ALE Heavy Lift was tasked with skidding an 800 ton railway bridge over a highway using skidding equipment and steel strands. The steel strands were used as diagonals within the skidding towers and as a connection in a longitudinal direction between the skidding supports. Before the bridge could be skided onto the towers, more than 20 cable strands had to be pre-loaded to the same tension.

Positioning Structural Steel for the Roof of the Mercedes-Benz Stadium
In 2014, the Atlanta Falcons broke ground on a $1.4 billion new stadium in downtown Atlanta. Set to complete in 2017, the 30-story structure will contain roughly 20,000 tons of structural steel, a retractable roof and a 360-degree halo video board that will span five stories inside the stadium.

Removing the Wheel Studs on a Caterpillar 777 Dump Truck
Loose wheel studs on Caterpillar 777 dump truck were increasing the vehicle's downtime and needed to be removed and replaced. The current method of removal used a cutting torch which was unsafe and would damage the main structure of the wheel.
